Bail Release
When a court sets a bail amount, the defendant or their family can post bail — either in cash or through a licensed bail bond agency — to secure release while the case proceeds. A bail bond typically costs 10% of the total bail amount as a non-refundable premium.
Own Recognizance (OR) Release
A judge may release a defendant on their own recognizance — without requiring bail — based on factors such as community ties, employment, lack of prior record, and the nature of the charges. The defendant signs a promise to appear at all court dates.
Sentence Completion
When a sentenced inmate completes their term, they are processed for release. Good-time credits, work credits, and other factors can affect the actual release date. LASD calculates projected release dates based on these factors.
Court Order
A judge may order release at a hearing — for example, after charges are dismissed, bail is reduced, or a motion is granted. Release following a court order still requires facility processing time.
Why Release Processing Takes Time
Even after bail is posted or a release decision is made, the physical release of an individual from an LA County jail facility can take several hours. The following factors can delay release:
- Medical evaluation or clearance required at intake or release
- Classification processing — determining appropriate housing or release conditions
- Outstanding warrants from other jurisdictions being verified
- Immigration detainer (ICE hold) placed on the individual
- Probation or parole hold requiring notification of supervising agency
- Court-ordered hold pending a hearing
- Administrative processing backlog at the facility
- Bail paperwork not yet fully processed by the facility
- Transfer between facilities in progress
- System update delay — the online database may lag behind actual status

Holds, Transfers, and Other Custody Complications
Immigration Detainers (ICE Holds)
If U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has placed a detainer on an individual, the jail may hold them beyond their scheduled release date to allow ICE to take custody. Posting bail does not automatically override an immigration detainer.
Outstanding Warrants
An individual may have outstanding arrest warrants from other California counties or other states. These warrants can prevent release and may result in transfer to the jurisdiction that issued the warrant.
Probation and Parole Holds
If the individual was on probation or parole at the time of arrest, their supervising agency must be notified. A hold may be placed pending a probation or parole violation hearing.
Facility Transfers
Inmates may be transferred between LASD facilities based on classification, medical needs, housing availability, or court proximity. During a transfer, the individual may temporarily not appear in the online inmate search.
Medical and Classification Processing
All individuals entering LASD custody undergo medical screening and classification. This process can extend booking and release times, particularly if medical treatment or mental health evaluation is required.
